Managed Infertility Program (MIP)

The Optum Managed Infertility Program (MIP) is designed to help women optimally navigate the complicated and often stressful aspects of infertility services.

Program Goals

  • Help women obtain the care that is right for them
  • Explain and address infertility treatment costs
  • Facilitate access to high-quality infertility services
  • Reduce the risk of multiple births, as well as the risks and costs associated with the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
  • Reduce health risks throughout the child's life

Service Overview

We are committed to improving the quality and affordability of health care for all MIP participants. We help patients maximize their health care benefits and promote optimal outcomes through assistance with complex decisions and education for patients about obtaining the right care, at the right place and the right time. This program is designed to complement the treatment plan you develop for the member. MIP nurse case managers and reproductive endocrinologists facilitate the following:

  • Early identification and enrollment

    • Inform members about where to seek quality infertility care
    • Claims review
    • Pre-certification of services
  • Education

    • Coach members on infertility topics such as twin and triplet births and infertility drugs
    • Review benefit plans and applicable state mandates
    • Discuss treatment options
  • Pre-certification and treatment planning

    • Conduct patient assessments, ensuring members meet administrative and clinical criteria/guidelines
    • Review the proposed treatment plan for compliance with clinical guidelines
    • Reproductive endocrinologists provide expert advice for the infertility team and conduct peer-to-peer discussions (when appropriate)
    • Specialized nurses review outcomes throughout treatment to help prepare patients for the next steps
